What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared
to what lies within Us
By Derek Alton
Most of us know the danger our current lifestyle is causing. How all the pollution from our cars and the chemicals we put in everything, are impacting the environment around us in a negative way. And many of us get really upset at our government for not doing anything about it and instead supporting the pocket books of the industry. I know I do! And I get even angrier when 3000 people march to parliament hill demanding action and the government still does nothing. And then I realized that even if the government did do something it would not change how I live. They could set standards on industry emissions; they could create carbon caps and invest in wind and solar energy, all of which are great things to do. However, that would not stop me from buying too many things, or from getting the cheapest food when I go grocery shopping. It would not necessarily stop me from using my car or going on that road trip across the states that I really want to do. Really in the end it is about the choices I make. So it is great for me to complain about the government or other people not doing something but if I am still not taking big steps myself, I do not have ground to stand on. Besides the government usually follows the people, therefore it is up to us as responsible citizens, to lead the way. And there are many people who are doing amazing things. There are real trail blazers out there, who are pushing the barrier on what it means to live a sustainable lifestyle, and with them at the helm we as a society are changing, and our government will soon follow too. So though it is important that I let my MP, my MPP, my mayor, my family and my friends know how I feel, my real focus is should be on the choices I make in my life. Maybe one day I can be a trailblazer too. For in the end, the answer to all our problems is not our government, it is us as individuals, doing the right thing and inspiring others through our own actions. So instead of focusing on others, I will focus on myself, on my choices, for that is where my true power lies.
